Queensland is leading the termination of water fluoridation in Australia and setting an example to other states. The reasons are simple: fluoridation is TOXIC – there is overwhelming scientific evidence it damages our health; it is NOT EFFECTIVE in reducing tooth decay; it’s a GROSS WASTE of ratepayers funds; and it is absolutely UNETHICAL to force toxic fluoridation chemicals on the public without factual informed consent that has never been given.
Of the the 77 councils in Queensland, only 19 of these (and probably soon even less) still have mandated water fluoridation. The number of councils still adding fluoridation chemicals to their public water supplies has declined from over 50 to under 20, with more councils likely to cease this absurd and harmful intervention as they become more aware of the facts and as they respond to the awareness and the demands of the public.
Queensland is the only State or Territory in Australia where the local council politicians have the power to decide to stop or continue mandating water fluoridation of public water schemes.
In the five other states and two territories it is mainly an intervention that is mandated by State or Territory Members of Parliament. Although in the state of New South Wales, a handful of councils have the power not to commence fluoridation, but according to NSW state law, all the NSW councils are not allowed to stop fluoridation. Apart from Queensland, fluoridation is therefore imposed at state level and there is no federal government fluoridation mandate in Australia.
Since fluoridation commenced in Queensland in 2013, NOT ONE fluoridating Queensland council has been transparent or told the truth on their website about the fluoridation of public water supplies. NONE of them have have informed their ratepayers and water consumers that their councillors are in fact responsible for the decision to add toxic industrial-waste chemicals to their drinking water. NOT ONE of the fluoridating councils has consulted the public and not one has obtained their consent for this medical mandate that is clearly and demonstrably not safe and not effective.
And of course, NONE of these fluoridating councils have or will make any effort to inform the public of the 2024 US Federal Court ruling that, over a comprehensive 7-year trial, exhaustively examined ALL of the scientific research and concluded that water fluoridation (at less than the concentration rate often used in Queensland) is damaging to the health of our children. In late 2012, the Queensland fluoridation law was changed from a State Mandate to a local Councillor Mandate. Since then, more than 30 Queensland councils have assessed the circumstances and appropriately voted to reject water fluoridation. Back then the evidence
for this cessation decision was obvious, but now it’s blatantly obvious; to the extend that councils continuing water fluoridation, despite the facts, could be regarded as negligent.
A summary of the reasons why Queensland councils have decided to reject fluoridation:
- COST: fluoridation is a dreadful waste of money, involving substantial capital and ongoing operating and maintenance costs.
- NOT SAFE: there is overwhelming quality scientific evidence showing a wide variety of physiological harms cause by the ingestion of fluoridation chemicals, especially the neurological damage cause to the fetus, infant and child. There are no Australian Government studies showing fluoridation is safe.
- NOT EFFECTIVE: Despite what we have been told for decades, based on junk science, water fluoridation is NOT effective in reducing tooth decay. Dozens of large-scale, population-based studies clearly show water fluoridation has little of no effect in reducing tooth decay. In fact several of these major studies confirm that fluoridation damages the teeth in the form of dental fluorosis.
- PUBLIC OPINION: there is no community consultation and there is substantial and growing opposition as the public become more aware of the facts about fluoridation.
- ETHICAL CONCERNS: fluoridation is mass medication, with no freedom of choice; it is not a water treatment but a healthcare treatment imposed on the public without consent.
- AGAINST CONSENSUS: only 19 out of 77 councils still fluoridate and more would undoubtedly cease if they were not tied into the SEQ water grid.
- STAFF SAFETY RISKS/EQUIPMENT BREAKDOWNS: employees operating the fluoride dosing plants are dealing with an extremely toxic chemical which creates potential risk and compensation payouts. If the equipment fails it can be extremely costly to repair.
- LEGAL RISK: With the recent US court ruling, councillors continuing fluoridation may be negligent or may face possible future class actions.
At the time of writing, Gympie Regional Council had just voted 6 to 3 to stop fluoridating their water, but have since stated they should now consult the 52 percent of their public receiving fluoridated drinking water, even though they never consulted the public or their constituents when fluoridation began 14 years ago or at any time since then. After this vote the Gympie Council uploaded a video of Queensland state health officials presenting lies, half-truths and lies by omission to these councillors.
Also at the time of writing, the Toowoomba Regional Council is without fluoridated water because the fluoridation plant broke down and has been inoperable for more than 10 months.
The map of Queensland above shows Gympie and Toowoomba as non-fluoridated. This leaves only EIGHT towns (with more than 400 residents) located within only SIX councils in regional Queensland with fluoridated drinking water, and an additional 11 councils connected to (locked into) the south-east water grid.
When the law was changed in 2012 to give councils the power to stop, eight of the 11 south-east Queensland councils enquired about stopping fluoridation, but the State Government lied to them by saying it may cost hundreds of millions of dollars to keep the other three councils fluoridated. This was utterly astounding.
The fastest way to stop water fluoridation in these 11 south-east councils would be for the 127 councillors to all vote for fluoridation to cease. This is only a matter of time.
Now that a US Federal Judge has ruled that fluoridated water, with all other exposures, is an unreasonable neurotoxic risk to the IQ of children, more Queensland councils will no doubt continue the trend of de-fluoridation.
Many Queensland community groups are pressuring councils by submitting complaints, petitions, Notices of Liability and Letters of Demand and some are even refusing to pay their water bills until their complaints are resolved by Councils voting to stop this absurd fluoridation mandate.
With only about five percent of the world’s population receiving fluoride-poisoned tap water, it is well time all Australian states and territories cease the health-damaging, ineffective and unethical process of forced water fluoridation and join the majority of the world.
Politicians cannot continue to use the water supply, without consent, to deliver a toxic waste chemical that causes neurological damage to children, when there are other proven effective programs to reduce tooth decay.
